INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION
FOR YOUR PRODUCTION

What is industrial automation and how to get started.

VMV

Industrial automation

Industrial automation is not a dashboard and a few sensors. It is about transforming manufacturing into a more predictable, safer, and more cost-effective system – with less variation, less downtime, and better control over capacity.

VMV-AUTOMATION builds and modernizes automation so that technology serves the business: more units produced, more stable quality, lower costs, better traceability and easier upgrades in the future.

What is industrial automation?

In short: using control systems, software, sensors, drives and communications to automatically control machines and processes with minimal human intervention.

In practice, automation is an integration of hardware and software:

Hardware
• PLC/PAC controllers and I/O modules
• frequency converters, servo drives and motors
• electrical panel and power section
• sensors, vision, safety devices
• valves, pneumatics, relays and actuators
• industrial networks, communications and edge devices

Software
• HMI interfaces for operators
• SCADA platforms for monitoring, alarms and reports
• databases, traceability and OEE
• integrations to ERP/MES/CMMS
• analytics, IIoT and, if needed, AI tools

What is the real goal?

Automation is a tool for production efficiency. It helps you to:
• stabilize processes
• speed up the flow
• reduce scrap and rework
• increase safety
• get reliable data for decisions

Automation with Rittal

What technologies and brands do we integrate?

We choose a combination according to the machine, process, motion requirements, safety, integration and future upgrades.

  • Automation fails not only because of bad software. Sometimes it fails because of communication, environment and physical implementation. That's why we include Moxa for industrial networks, gateways and OT/IT connectivity, Rittal for switchboards, power distribution and cabinet climate control, and igus – when we have flexible cabling, power strips and cable protection for dynamic movements.

  • When looking for a robust backbone for machine and line control, we often work with Siemens SIMATIC and TIA Portal, Omron Sysmac, Mitsubishi Electric MELSEC, Schneider Electric Modicon and EcoStruxure, WAGO controllers and I/O, and Phoenix Contact PLCnext. This allows us to build both classic and more open architectures – from a compact machine to an expandable line with IIoT and edge logic.

Siemens is a natural choice when you are looking for strong integration between controllers, HMI, drives and engineering in a common environment. Omron Sysmac is very strong at synchronizing motion, vision, safety and machine automation.

  • For motion, speed, torque and positioning, the architecture is usually built around ABB, SEW-EURODRIVE, Mitsubishi Electric, Delta and, where applicable, Siemens. SEW is particularly strong where mechanics and drive need to work as one – with gearmotors, decentralized drives and motion functions. Mitsubishi Electric and Delta are very good at motion-heavy applications, and ABB is a strong choice when drive, electrification and automation need to work in one line.

  • For reliable automation you need good input data. That's why we often use sensor and vision solutions from SICK, ifm and Omron – for position, presence, distance, codes, measurement, diagnostics and traceability. ifm is particularly useful when you want IO-Link, parameterization and more diagnostic data from the field. SICK is very strong in sensor-based applications, machine vision and performance with safety. Omron is very good when vision, robotics and machine control have to be combined in one logic.

  • When the task requires motion, gripping, vacuum, dosing or a fast and reliable actuator, Festo and SMC are the most common choices. Both brands are a natural choice for machines and lines that require robust pneumatics, electric actuators, valve islands, vacuum or components for robotic applications.

  • When designing safety functions, we work with proven solutions such as Pilz, SICK, Omron and the safety environments of large PLC ecosystems. The goal is not just to "have a light barrier", but to ensure that the system is properly assessed, the zones are designed sensibly and the machine remains safe without killing productivity.

Industry 4.0 and smart factories – the truth

Industry 4.0 only makes sense when it is based on working automation. This is when IIoT, edge computing, traceability and analytics really help – for better planning, fewer unexpected stops, better quality and better energy efficiency.

Energy management as part of automation

When automation is designed correctly, it naturally opens the door to energy management. Data from controllers, sensors, I/O stations and power distribution can feed platforms like ABB Ability, Siemens SIMATIC Energy Manager and Schneider Electric EcoStruxure to see not only how the machine is performing, but also how much it costs to operate.

How we work

You contact us → we analyze → we choose the architecture → we design, build and integrate → we launch → we train → we stay for support and optimization.

ROI: how we look at returns

We don't just look at ROI as an abstract percentage. We look at it through:
• more units produced per hour
• less downtime
• less waste and rework
• less manual labor in tight spaces
• lower energy consumption
• better traceability and less risk

How to start right

The best start is usually not the “big project.” The best start is a clear pilot or short engineering analysis of a bottleneck, a process with a lot of defects, an unstable cycle time, a heavy manual operation, or a problematic integration. This way you get a real picture of complexity, time, and return – without unnecessary risk.
